WHY?
There are a couple of reasons the tank needs to be drained.
- First, because it's just good equipment maintenance. Most professionals suggest that you drain your water heater every 6 to 12 months. Whether your water is treated, untreated, or on municipal water system , build-up can occur. Draining it removes any sediment or buildup that collects on the bottom of the tank. This buildup will cause the water heater to work harder using more energy and that costs you more money. It can also cause the equipment to fail prematurely.
- There is a Clog.
- Be prepared for a leak. There is a chance that the drain valve will not fully close again once you open it to drain the tank. Remember, this drain valve has been sitting for six months to a year (or longer) and the older it gets, the less likely it will be to close again completely. Be prepared to either put a cap over the valve or to replace the drain valve completely. If your water heater has a cheap plastic valve, this is a good time to upgrade it.
